Seattle Modern Orchestra plays at the Folio: the Seattle Athenaeum an evening of music by two Seattle composers, Angelique Poteat‘s From Subterranea, Tom Baker‘s Fifteen Moments, and two pieces inspired by poetry, George Crumb‘s Eleven Echoes of Autumn, and Toru Takemitsu‘s From Far Beyond Chrysanthemums and November Fog.

Folio music concerts are performed “in the round,” with audience members sitting close and encircling the performers.

ABOUT OUR GUEST COMPOSERS

Angelique Poteat is a native of the Pacific Northwest.  Her music has been recorded and performed in Australia, Germany, Lithuania, Hungary, Japan, Italy, Norway, and all over the United States by ensembles including the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Yakima Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Northwest, Seattle Collaborative Orchestra, Saratoga Orchestra, Woodlands Symphony Orchestra, Trio Tara, Enso Quartet and the New York New Music Ensemble.  Some notable performances include Beyond Much Difference (2014), a piece commissioned by the Seattle Symphony and performed by them at their January 2015 Sonic Evolution concert with Mike McCready, Chris Cornell, and members of the bands, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, and more; Much Difference (2014) at (le) Poisson Rouge in New York; Roots of Variegation (2012) at the 2012 International Women’s Brass Conference; Reflections on a Summer (2008)at the 2012 Druskomanija festival in Lithuania; and A Perspective (2009)at the 2010 International VSA Festival. Poteat earned the degrees Bachelor of Music from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and Master of Music from the College-Conservatory of Music.  She has studied composition with Samuel Adler, Joel Hoffman, Mara Helmuth, Anthony Brandt, Pierre Jalbert, Shih-Hui Chen, Arthur Gottschalk, and Samuel Jones.

Tom Baker has been active as a composer, performer, and producer in the Seattle new-music scene since arriving in 1994. He is the artistic director of the Seattle Composers’ Salon, co-founder of the Seattle EXperimental Opera (SEXO), an advisory board member of the Washington Composers’ Forum, founder of the new-music recording label Present Sounds Recordings, and is currently professor of composition at Cornish College of the Arts.

Tom has received awards and grants for his work from many organizations, including Meet The Composer, the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, 4Culture, and Artist Trust. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida and the Montalvo Arts Center in California. His works have been performed throughout the United States, in Canada and in Europe.

Tom is also active as a performer and improviser, specializing in fretless guitar and live-electronics. He has recorded seven albums, including two solo records. Triptet, a trio with Michael Monhart and Greg Campbell, recently released its third album, Figure in the Carpet, on Brooklyn-based Engine Records. Tom has worked with many innovative musicians, including Stuart Dempster, William O. Smith, Christian Asplund, Chinary Ung, Ellen Fullman, Matana Roberts, and Henry Threadgill.
